Today I want to talk about why it's not too late to launch a podcast. Many of you may have been thinking about launching a podcast, but are feeling a little bit hesitant, because you think, “Well, so many people launched podcasts in 2020. Am I too late to the podcasting game now? Has all of the opportunity gone? Is the market too saturated?” All of the above.
So here are three reasons why it's not too late to launch a podcast. I will caveat this and say that it's not too late to launch a podcast. As long as your podcast is creating some value, that the existing podcasts, in your space, aren't providing. And I know that can be really scary. You're like, “Well, what value can I provide that nobody else is providing?”

Is it too late to launch a podcast?
#1. Podcasting is mainstream now
Three reasons why it's not too late to launch a podcast. Firstly, podcasts are mainstream now, right? We've got a lot of major radio stations. We've got companies like Spotify, Wondery, NPR. All of the really big media companies are starting to get into podcasting, which from a creative perspective you might think, “Well, actually that's really bad, because they're going to dominate the categories.” But, that doesn't mean that they are making it harder for independent podcasters, like you and me, to stand out.
What it does mean though, is that more people than ever, are become aware of podcasting, they are tuning in. They are listening to podcasts, because they are mainstream. This means that you have a greater chance of being able to reach the people, who you are trying to reach, with your podcast. So, I personally think it's a really great thing that podcasting is becoming mainstream. So, I don't think that means any less opportunity for you.
#2. A podcast can be consumed in almost any situation
Secondly, podcasting is a type of content that you can consume while doing something else. Right? An audio is literally the only content you can consume while doing something else, which basically means that they are either listening to music, an audiobook or a podcast. That's the only content that they can consume while doing something else. You wouldn't read a book while you are driving, you wouldn't watch a YouTube video you are walking, unless you are on a treadmill.
You wouldn't be able to do any of that while cleaning your house. But audio is something that they can have in their ears, while they are doing these mundane, everyday tasks. This means that it's the perfect complement to people's busy lives, the busy pace of life, where we don't have the time to stop and read a 1000 word blog posts. But we do have the time to listen to a five-minute podcast episode, while we're walking the dog.
#3. You can still create your own unique niche or difference
The third reason why I think it's not too late to launch a podcast is there is still so much opportunity to stand out, by carving out your own unique spot in your podcasting category. So when I say carving out your own unique spot, what this could look like, is a unique topic. It could be a unique style. So for example, this podcast, Socialette, the one that you're listening to, right now. I stood out in the business category by launching something that was five to 10 minutes long, when everyone else was doing 45 minutes, one hour, two hour interviews. That was how I stood out when I first launched this podcast, nearly three years ago.
Another way you can start out is with a unique audience. So, really getting honed in on, who that ideal listener is. And if you a really tight niche that you can niche into, that's even better.
You may be thinking, I'm not going to get thousands and thousands of listeners. That's totally fine. If you want the only podcast for your very, very specific niche, you don't need thousands of listeners to use that podcast to generate a good income. Let's put it that way, right? If you're the only podcast, they're going to be coming back to you over and over again, rather than alternating between your podcast and 10 others, that talk on the exact same category that you talk about.
You can also cut out your unique spot, by getting uniqueness on your show. So, while everyone in your industry might be interviewing the exact same thought leaders, maybe you will go a little bit left of field and you'll get somebody to talk on your podcast, who nobody else has ever interviewed before. So, the whole idea behind carving out the own unique spot, is rather than doing what everyone else is doing, looking for a way that you can zag. When everyone else zigs, how can you zag.
So now you know, it is never too late to launch your podcast – in fact, now is the perfect time to do so!
