Often, what moves the needle most in your business are the simple tweaks, like being curious (instead of rigid) and tracking your numbers (even if it's “boring”). In today's episode, I'm sharing 7 simple habits that can transform your business—and your business mindset.
– Why tracking your numbers *is* important, even when it seems boring and slow.
– How being curious and less attached to the outcome is so much more helpful than putting pressure on yourself, your business and your actions.
– Why saying “no” to the things that you *don't* want to do will help you make space so that you can say “yes” to the things you *do* want to do.
– How adopting a long-term focus will help you to create long-term growth, even though it's at the expense of short-term wins.
Today, I'm sharing seven simple habits that can completely transform your online business. Now, some of these might sound really not that simple on the surface, but they are quite simple when you start doing them over time, and they can have quite a big impact on not just how your business runs, but also the results that you get from showing up in this new way with these new habits.
I know it doesn't feel productive to sit at a spreadsheet every week and look at all of the different numbers in your business, but as the CEO of your business, even if it's just you in your business, tracking your numbers can be one of the best things that you can do.
Now we want to look at financial numbers. So we want to look at your revenue, your profit, and your cash flow so that you can make better-informed decisions. You can intentionally decide whether you can afford to invest in that course or not, and you can avoid running out of cash.
You can see what's actually driving sales and double down on that. But we also want to look at your marketing and your sales numbers, things like reach. Conversions at each step of your sales funnel and that means that you can really double down on what is actually converting and you can stop wasting time on the things that don't work, right?
Also, it can often feel like we are just treading water in our businesses and not going anywhere because growth does feel a little bit slower than what we expect it to most of the time but when you track those numbers over a longer period of time, that is when you start to notice the reward of your efforts and it feels really good to look back to six months ago, 12 months ago, and see how much further you have come rather than just comparing where you are today with where you were yesterday.
So that means treating new projects like an experiment, thinking, I wonder what will happen when I try this rather than, Ooh, this has to succeed or else, because you're then a lot less invested in the outcome and you're more invested in what you can learn from it and how you can apply those learnings to your business and improve it going forward.
Now it means getting curious about why something worked or didn't work rather than being really upset that it didn't work out and give up. This is one of the most important mindsets you can get into in your business and it's also one of the hardest, because who actually wants to fail?
Now, we, as overachievers, can be very quick to look at how we can do more things, how we can add more things to our plates. But every time we say yes to something, it means we're saying no to something else. So if you don't want to do something, it is okay to say no and it's okay to be more intentional with what you do say yes to. Saying no to something frees up a lot more space for a new yes.
Even if you don't yet know what that yes will be, space allows opportunities to bubble up to the surface, new opportunities to flow in that you didn't even know existed because you had so many other yeses that you had jam-packed your day and your week with.
The things that create long-term growth in your business come at the expense of short-term sales and short-term wins. For example, saying no to a new client, a one-on-one client, that's going to give you sales right now, and accepting that income cut because you know, it's going to free up your time to work on building out your group program, which is going to grow your business long-term. Or spending more time creating a lead magnet, than you would spend editing a reel because you know that your lead magnet is going to grow your email list over the long term, whereas an Instagram reel might only get you some reach for a couple of days.
So whenever you are making a decision, ask yourself, is this serving the longer-term vision of my business, or am I doing this because I want the short-term win?
Celebrating doesn't mean you're being complacent. It doesn't mean that you are giving up. It just means pausing long enough to reflect on how far you have already come, which can actually feel really motivating when you do it rather than constantly beating yourself up about how you are not where you want to be yet.
You can be grateful for where you are at in your business and you can still have big dreams for the future at the same time. They can both exist.
If you could solve this problem that you are overthinking by just thinking your way through it, you probably would have already solved it by now.
And believe me, I am an overthinker but I've learned that most of the time, the only way out of overthinking is to take action.
Or in other words, releasing your attachment to the outcome. My business looks so different from what I had envisioned it looking like even just three years ago and I have been through so many ups and downs and all of the things that I thought that I didn't want, ended up creating something better than I ever could have even imagined.
So even though your business is almost certainly not going to look like what you want it to, it will also almost certainly turn out to be something so much better than you ever could have expected. You just need to enjoy the process and trust that it will turn out really, really well.
Things will not always go to plan and that is a good thing because sometimes when things don't go to plan, it's actually opening up the opportunity for something better to happen. We just can't see it at the time.
