Episode transcript:
Hey! Welcome to the very first episode of Socialette. I am so excited to have you here and I can't wait to get stuck into the nitty-gritty.
But, before we get started I'm going to tell you a little bit about who I am and what I'm trying to achieve with Socialette. So, basically, what I'm trying to do is demystify marketing for you. In case you haven't noticed, there's a lot of rubbish out there – to put it nicely!
There's a lot of clutter and a lot of people telling you what you should be doing what you shouldn't be doing. I'm going to cut through all of that and just give you straight-up advice on what to do to market your business and grow your business.
So, I'm going to cut the fluffy, frilly stuff. I’m here to teach you exactly what you need to know, straight up. New episodes are going to be released every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. I know it sounds like a lot, but don't stress because they're not going to be long, long-winded episodes. They're going to be little, quick lessons with actionable tips that you can take away and implement to start growing your business straight away.
I’m going to cover topics such as Instagram marketing, Facebook Advertising, branding, marketing strategy, email marketing, content marketing… You name it, I will cover it.
Make sure that you hit subscribe in iTunes or follow on Spotify so you can get a notification each time a new episode is released, so you don't miss out!
So, who am I? I am the founder of Wildbloom – a wellness marketing consultancy devoted to helping genuinely good brands stand out in a saturated market. I've been talking about launching a podcast since, probably, late 2016, when I attended my friend’s podcasting conference called We Are Podcast. Before then, I'd always said “podcasting isn’t for me. I'm too introverted. I don't really enjoy talking”.
By the end of the two or three days of the conference, I was converted. I knew that I wanted to start a podcast.
So, with Wildbloom, we work one-on-one with clients to grow their business using digital marketing, social media, content marketing, etc.
BUT, not all business owners have the budget for one-on-one, done for you marketing, which is why I've started Socialette and I’m making it my mission to teach small business owners the skills they need to create the business of their dreams and to live life on their own terms.
When I was running a small business, I found that there were so many conflicting sources of marketing information. Now, this is the business that I had before Wildbloom, which was actually a product-based, health food business.
I found that there were so many people just waiting to take my money – greedy marketers who would try to give dodgy tactics and so many things that I really didn't need – and none of them really provided much in return.
There's just so much stuff out there to learn – so much stuff we should be doing. And, frankly, it's quite overwhelming. I'm going to be cutting through this crap and I'm going to teach you exactly which you need to know. No fluff.
Well, I don't want you to listen to an episode and then feel like you have to do what I've just recommended. There are so many different things that you can be doing to market your business, but that doesn't mean you should be doing ALL of them.
Honestly, I don't want you to be overwhelmed. I'd rather you just did a couple of things and did them well. Rather than feeling like you have to be on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, Google+, YouTube, podcasting, blogging… Everything! Don't do everything, because you'll get overwhelmed, you’ll spread yourself too thinly and you'll end up doing all of these things fairly average-ly. That's not really a word. But, they'll be mediocre and you'll probably give up after a few weeks because it'll be draining all your energy and you won't be seeing results.
Take it one step at a time. Enjoy the journey. Don't just focus on the destination – enjoy the ride. It's actually kind of fun once you know what you're doing.
People who look like their overnight successes, usually they did a lot of hard work to get there, so don't expect results super quickly.
Don't be afraid to try new things. This is a huge one because, quite often, if you're in that little business comfort zone, maybe you've been in business for a few years and things are working fine as they are. So, why change things? Well, there are so many different things out there to try and there are so many different things that are working right now. It's almost all that silly not to try them. So just try these things. Try them for a little while. Give them a shot, see if they work for you – but also don't be afraid to pivot if these new things don't work after you've tried them for a while.
Another thing you need to do is show up consistently for your audience. As I mentioned, pick a few platforms that you can stick to consistently and just be present on these platforms regularly. Don't make it a guessing game for your audience where they'll find you next, because if you're on Insta Stories one week, and then you're putting out a podcast the next month, and then you're on Facebook, and then you're on YouTube… They don't know where to find you, so it's it's a bit confusing for them.
I also want you to start to embrace life outside of your comfort zone. You're never going to be ready to host that in-person workshop or host that webinar or run that Facebook Live. You're never going to be “ready”. I'm not even ready and I've already done a few. So, just embrace living out of your comfort zone and challenge yourself to do new things.
I want you to pay really close attention to any of my episodes about strategy, branding or your ideal customer. They might not sound as fun as the episodes about growing your Instagram following or how to write a blog post, but these ones are the foundations of your marketing so they actually have a really big impact on your business – bigger than you could actually imagine right now.
Finally, I want you to have fun. So, if you're really not enjoying it – if you're not enjoying something – just don't do it. Don't be present on a platform that you feel you have to be present on. If you hate instagram, you know what? Don't be on Instagram. If you're not having fun doing it, it's not sustainable and it's just going to drain your energy. And that’s not a good place to be.
