Facebook Ads – I love them. Sadly, so many business owners don't love them quite as much and swear that they don’t work. So, the whole month of August is ALL about Facebook Ads. Yep, the WHOLE month. If you're not already using Facebook Ads, or you're terrified of setting foot inside Facebook Ads Manager, here are 8 reasons to use Facebook Ads in 2020.
(Pssst! You might also like this post rounding up the best Facebook Ad templates in 2019).
Before we get stuck in, let me just clarify: When I talk about Facebook Ads, I'm talking about the ones you set up inside Facebook Ads Manager, not Boosted Posts. I recently wrote about the difference between Facebook Ads and Boosted Posts.
If you're scared to start running Facebook Ads, or you see them as just another expense you can't afford, here's some real talk for you: When run correctly, Facebook Ads should bring in more money than you spend on them. They're an investment, not an expense.
Surely they're a lot of work for such a little return, right? Not exactly.
Do you dream of holidaying in the French Riviera or the Maldives while your business markets itself? Do you wish you could put a stop to the never ending hustle of getting new customers or clients through the virtual door?
I sound like a used car salesman – ha!
Anyway, the whole “you've got to spend money to make money” thing is so true. Whilst you can get a little bit of traction using free marketing tactics, with organic reach on the decline across most major social media platforms, you need to have Plan B ready to go.
If you build your entire business based on free Instagram traffic and the Instagram algorithm changes again, you could lose your entire business. I'm not even being dramatic here – it's not completely unrealistic. After all, Instagram changes its algorithm more often than I change my mind about what to eat.
Maybe you've already written Facebook Ads off as another “it doesn't work for my business” activity, but chances are that it does. You just haven't invested enough time or money into it to see real results.
That said, you can get real results from as little as $5 per day, but you can't expect a 7-figure revenue on such a small budget. It's about being realistic.
If that isn't enough to convince you to give Facebook ads a shot, here are 7 other reasons to use Facebook Ads.
That's right – there are over 1 billion people on Facebook. For every 6 people in the world (excluding China), one of them is on Facebook. So, chances are that your ideal customer or client is on there. If you haven't found them yet, don't stress; you just have to get your targeting spot on.
If your competitors are popping up on your ideal customer or client's newsfeed day in and day out, they're going to be front of mind when it's time for that person to purchase. Wouldn't you rather be front of mind for your audience?
(PS. One of my favourite Facebook Ads hacks is to spy on your competitors' ads, which you can now do via their Facebook Page).
Maybe none of your competitors are using Facebook Ads yet. This is an even better place to be because you can be the first to do it. And, if there's less competition in your space, you might find that it's cheaper to run Facebook Ads.
As much as we'd love to pretend that the hours of work we put into managing our Facebook Pages is worth anything, these days it's really not. You can have 1,000 people who like your Facebook Page and only reach 20 when you post something. Don't let your content face the crickets – you invested valuable time and energy into writing that blog post, so invest some spare change in getting people to read it.
Disclaimer: This isn't permission to let your Facebook Page slip to the side – you've got to keep it in tip-top shape because people will click through to it from your page.
Here are some tips on optimising your Facebook Page.
Unlike traditional media (TV, magazines, radio, etc.) you don't need a big budget to get started with Facebook Ads. I've said it before and I'll say it again: All you need is $5 a day. This makes it perfect for start-ups to reach new people and to grow their audiences. And, the best part is that once you have a bigger budget and you know that your marketing funnel is working properly, you can scale your ads and reach even more people every day.
Here are my top tips for running Facebook Ads on a small budget.
The Facebook Ads targeting options are second to none. You can get so specific with the people you target, which means you're not wasting money on showing your ad to people who would never buy what you're selling in the first place.
Plus, Facebook has retargeting, which is a fun little feature that lets you show ads to the people who've already visited your website. So, you know how you added that one pair of ASOS boots to your shopping cart that one time and now they're following you around the Internet? Yeah, you can do that too.
If you haven't added any new contacts to your list since you ran that giveaway back in February 2016, it's time to fix it. How do you fix it? Well, you run ads offering your audience something they simply can't resist and ask for their e-mail address in return.

It's difficult measuring the ROI (return on investment) of a TV ad or a double-page magazine spread. But, it isn't so hard measuring how many sales your Facebook ads resulted in – if you have the Facebook Pixel installed, that is. If you're on a WordPress site, this plugin makes installing the Pixel a lot simpler than trying to do it yourself.
My point is that it's really easy to see whether you're making a positive return from your Facebook Ads or throwing money out of your window.
Seriously, Facebook Ads are very easily DIY-able, unlike most forms of advertising. I'm running a free Facebook Ads training to get you DIY-ing the right way. Click here to register.
