How to discover the perfect idea for your digital product, course or membership.
So, you know you want to launch something – you’re just not quite sure exactly WHAT to launch. Or maybe you have an inkling of an idea, but you just don’t know how to flesh it out a bit more.
There’s this misconception that you have to be super creative to come up with an idea for a product and that’s simply not true. There are a few places you can look to for inspiration. Let's dive in.
-
Pay attention to the questions people ask you
Maybe you’re constantly getting people asking the same questions, or maybe you’re getting emails requesting the same service over and over – only you don’t provide that service (and you don’t want to provide it either, but it’s something you could teach people how to DIY).
For example, a few years ago, I was constantly getting enquiries from people wanting me to manage their Facebook Ads. Only, their budgets were tiny. Like $100 a month, which wouldn’t even cover my management fee back then, let alone their Facebook Ads spend.
I knew that they could get much better results by learning how to run their own ads, rather than spending their precious budgets on someone to manage their ads for them. And that’s why I created my now retired Facebook Ads course.
What questions are people asking you over and over? Chances are, this could make a great product.
-
Ask your audience – what are you struggling with?
I did this at the end of 2019 and it really made a huge difference in the planning of my upcoming membership launch. Because, what I thought they were struggling with was totally different from what they’re actually struggling with.
You might also discover there’s a simple frustration or challenge that you can solve by creating an online course or membership – you just have to ask your audience.
And seriously, the best kinds of products are the ones that solve a real problem for their customers.
-
Ask them – what do they want? Then deliver what they need
For example, so many people in my audience say they want more Instagram followers. What do they actually need? Uh – paying customers and clients!
So ask your audience what they want – what the ideal solution would look like to them – but dig deeper and figure out what they actually need. Because they don’t always realise what they need themselves.
-
Stalk online – what are they asking in FB groups? Reddit? Amazon book reviews?
Again, it’s likely that the same questions come up over and over. But there are so many places online you can go to find out what your audience’s pain points are – and these pain points might spark some inspiration for a product.
If anyone has written a book about the topic of your expertise, pop onto Amazon and read the reviews – especially the 1 and 2 star ones. These will often show you what people are struggling with and what other people in your industry are missing.

ALWAYS BE LISTENING
Go to events and listen to what the people around you are saying. Have a little chit chat with your existing clients and customers. Talk to others in your industry.
Always have your feelers out for a potential product idea – you never know when the right idea will pop up.
