I'm wrapping up the last lesson of Things That I Learned in 2020. This one is kind of a funny one, because I talked a lot about money last year, in particular, how I grew my business from a hundred thousand dollars in 2019 to over a million last year.
I know it triggered a lot of people. I lost a lot of followers after I shared that my business hit a million dollars, and that's totally fine. Everyone's at different stages with their journey on money mindset and how they feel about comparing themselves to other people, which I don't believe you should compare yourselves, guys, and how they feel about other people's success. No judgment for those people, but I really wanted to talk about this concept of making more money and the lesson that I learned from finally starting to make real money in my business, because believe it or not guys, I had a few years there where it was feast or famine.

What making money in your business actually means
Impacts on my day-to-day life
What I realized was making more money isn't just about having more money in the bank and being able to afford nice things. Yes, it's really nice to be able to buy wine in the $20 to $30 price bracket rather than the $10 to $15 price bracket. It's really nice to start thinking about, “Okay, maybe I want to buy somewhere new to live, like a new house and have a bit more space. Maybe I want to upgrade my gym membership and add reformer Pilates.” That was something I did that really changed my life. Yes, it's nice to be able to afford those things, but making more money in my business… and also side note, guys, just because my business made a million dollars doesn't mean I have a million dollars in the bank. A lot of my non-business friends think I'm a millionaire, and I'm like, “Guys, no, that's a million dollars pre-expenses.” Yes, my business is profitable, but I do not have a million dollars in the bank.
Investing my growth back into the business
Anyway, making more money isn't just about having the money in the bank and being able to buy nice things. It's also been what's allowed me to invest in working with a high-ticket coach, investing in other courses, investing in ways to upskill, which is what allows me to better serve you guys. The more money I earn, the more that I could invest in upskilling myself, the better I can serve my audience. More money has also allowed me to invest in things like Facebook ads. The more that I spend on Facebook ads, the more people I can reach and the more people I can impact. It's also meant that I've been able to start growing my team and delegate more. I previously used to spend a lot of time writing my own EDMs, my own emails to my list, and being able to hire a copywriter means that I now have the time freedom to create new products, to spend planning my podcast episodes better, to write a book.
Freedom to create and show up for my audience
It's also meant that I can start to step back from my business a bit more, have a bit more fun, enjoy myself more, have time to play around and experiment with new products. Anything that I feel like doing, I now have a lot more time to do that. Yeah, having more money in the bank is nice to look at, but ultimately I can reach more people. I can make a bigger impact. I can learn more, and I can better serve my audience, and I can better serve myself by having more fun, more rest, more relaxation, which in turn allows me to show up better for my audience and better as a business owner. Often we think, “Oh, I'm not in business to be rich. I'm not in business to make lots of money,” and that's totally fine.
But also remember, making more money is how you make a bigger impact, is how you help more people. It's how you find that freedom that you really want from your business, that you can't get in a job, that impact that you can't make in a job.
I hope this has got you thinking a little bit differently about making money and how wanting to make more money is not a bad thing. It's not a sign that you're being greedy or anything like that. It's simply how you can reach more people, impact more people and make a bigger difference in the world.
