6 reasons you should embrace a beginner mindset in your business and launch
I recently added reformer Pilates to my gym membership, thinking I needed a less intense exercise to complement the high-intensity workouts I usually do.
That first workout I did? I looked like an absolute idiot. I couldn’t get my feet in the straps, I didn’t know where to put my head and I was in real pain.
And that’s where the idea for this blog came from – because starting reformer made me realise that I need to approach it with a beginner mindset.
I realised that a lot of these lessons are applicable to business – and that we should all be approaching our businesses and launching with a beginner mindset, because we’re all still constantly learning – and if we’re not learning, we’re not growing.
Here are my tips to help you cultivate that beginner mindset when it comes to business and launching
-
Ask for help when you need it
When I couldn’t figure out how the heck to get my feet into the foot straps on the reformer machine, I should’ve asked the teacher. But I was too proud to do so.
The same goes in business: Never let your pride or your ego get in the way of asking for help when you need it.
Too often we try to take the difficult approach and figure it out ourselves, when it’s a question that someone else could answer for us in 2 minutes.
-
Find someone more experienced than you/an expert and follow their lead
You can’t be expected to be an expert in everything, so when you’re struggling in an area that you’re not an expert in, it can help to find someone who IS an expert and follow their guidance.
Practically, this could be listening to their podcast, consuming their social media content, maybe completing their online courses.
Handy tip: It also helps to only follow one expert in each space, otherwise you might get overwhelmed at all the information out there.
-
Don’t be so afraid to fail that you don’t take action
It actually took me MONTHS of saying I was going to upgrade my gym membership to include reformer before I did it
Why? Because I was comfortable doing the gym workouts I already knew – I was a little scared to try something new.
The same goes in business and ESPECIALLY launching. Don’t be so afraid that your launch will fail, that you never even launch in the first place.
-
Get over yourself – don’t worry about looking silly
Who cares how you look? Who cares if people laugh?
I think too often our egos can get in the way and we feel like we have to always present this picture-perfect front in business.
You know what? If you launch and your launch flops, people (a) probably won’t notice and (b) will actually be impressed if you can talk about it and share your mistakes.
We’ve all had our fair share of flops and mistakes, and that’s good because it means you’re learning.
-
Don’t compare yourself to people who’ve been doing it a lot longer
There are some girls in the pilates classes that look like graceful ballerinas, whereas I look like a baby elephant dancing to Shakira.
My ego hates it, because I’m super competitive and I want to look like a graceful ballerina – but I have to remind myself that they’ve been doing pilates for years, and I’m only a few weeks in.
The same goes in business – don’t compare where you are with where anyone else is – they might have been doing it a lot longer than you, or your journey might have taken a different path.
-
Enjoy the process – it’s not about the destination
In pilates, this means slowing down, tuning into my breath and not just going through the motions, hoping to one day be as graceful and controlled as the pros.
In business, this means not just focusing on where you want to be in 5 years, but also enjoying your day-to-day work. It means accepting all of the ups and downs as part of the process that will get you to where you want to be.
