Continuing with the lessons that I learned in 2020, I'm pretty excited about today's one. It's really something that happened in 2019, but it wasn't until 2020 that I could start to see the bigger picture of it. And the lesson is that when things don't go to plan, the universe is just trying to save your butt, so trust it.

Learn to pivot when things don't go according to plan
What happened in 2019 was I had a pretty big tech fail on a webinar that I was running for a launch. Now to put this into context, I was down to probably my last hundred dollars in the bank. And I was really counting on this launch being the thing that was going to bring in enough money to keep my business running. And what happened was I went to go live on the webinar.
The webinar platform crashed, and left all 700 people who had registered for it in the lurch, and completely ruined my launch. So that didn't feel very good at the time. Let's be honest. I got home from my coworking space, poured myself a large glass of wine and climbed into bed, had an ugly cry. Started looking for jobs, because I was just so sick of the inconsistency in my business. And at the time, yeah, it was horrible. In hindsight now, I look back on that and I can take it as a sign. There was something desperately wrong in my business that I was down to my last hundred dollars. And that I was counting on one launch to save me, and I knew something had to change. I thought, I'm either going back to a job or I'm figuring out what my niche is, figuring out what my thing is.
Take a step back from the problem
And, actually, I already knew what my thing was. I knew that I wanted “launching” to be my niche. I had just been sitting on it for so long that I was too scared to take that action and actually niche down. And if that webinar crash hadn't happened, I probably wouldn't have niched down. And I definitely wouldn't be where I am today. That was the universe giving me a push. It was saying, Steph, something needs to change, you haven't been listening to all of the little hints that I've been giving you so far. So I'm going to make this really painful for you. And that's exactly what happened. And it was the universe trying to save my butt. What was really interesting was this one lesson that I learnt in 2020. And that is that the only reason you have problems is because you think that the problem is a problem.
Look at the issue from a different perspective
If you don't see it as a problem, it's not a problem. Everything will unfold exactly as it's supposed to. I could have looked at that webinar crash as a problem. And I did. And I thought, the only way out of this problem is to go and get a job, but it actually ended up being a big opportunity because it reminded me why I was in business in the first place. It wasn't until I actually got invited to go for an interview for a job that I'd applied for, that I realized, no, I actually really enjoy having the freedom of running my business. I'm not ready to give up just yet. What can I do to make sure that I don't have to give up on my business? And in the end, everything did unfold exactly as it was supposed to.
If you'd told me back in July, 2019, that a year later I would have a million dollar business, I would have laughed because it felt so unbelievable at the time. But in the end, it all unfolded as it was supposed to. And that really horrible moment where I was in bed, ugly crying, drinking wine at 11:00 AM, was like the turning point. And it had to happen to get to where I am. So I hope that you'll remember this next time something doesn't quite go to plan, or you come up against something that feels like a problem in your business. And just remember, one day I'll be able to look back on this and be like, I understand why it had to happen this way.
